Sotheby's in New York

A major sale of impressionist and modern art at Sotheby's in New York late on Wednesday fell far short of expectations, with works by several major artists failing to find buyers.

The waving grain gave him an opportunity to experiment with color and technique. Here he juxtaposed the golden yellow of the ripe wheat with a colorful swirl of yellow, green, red, brown and black in the foreground. The very high placing of the horizon means that nearly the whole canvas is covered with the colors of the growing crops. Visible in the distance are the low mountains of the Alpilles range. VanGogh
